Frequently Asked Questions

Is prior choral experience required for my child to join the NJSCC?

Previous choral experience is not required. We invite and encourage any child interested in choral singing to attend a rehearsal and meet with the Artistic Director.

How are the children evaluated at the audition? Does my child need to prepare in advance?

The best way to help your child prepare is to talk through what will happen during their audition and decide together what song they might like to sing (note: children auditioning for the Apprentice Choir are not required to sing a prepared piece). Click here for more about what to expect for your child’s audition.

When and how will I be notified if my child has been accepted to the NJSCC?

You will be notified by email of your child’s status at the email address you provided on the audition form within three weeks of your child’s audition. You will then need to complete and submit the registration package along with the registration deposit by June 15 in order to reserve your child’s place in the chorus.

How many children will be accepted into each chorus?

Our plans are to accept a maximum of 50 singers to each choir.

My child sings in another choir at church or school. Can (s)he still enroll?

Absolutely! The NJSCC is designed to complement the experience that children receive in their school or church choirs. Any child able to commit to the NJSCC rehearsal and performance schedule may enroll.

If my child becomes a chorus member this year, can (s)he enroll again next year?

Yes. Returning members are welcomed.  The Artistic Director will assess vocal development from year to year.

What is the cost to join the NJSCC?

The tuition for the season (September through June) is:

  • Apprentice Choir (grades K-2): $650
  • Intermediate Choir (grades 3-5): $750

A registration fee of $50 along with the completed Registration Form is due upon enrollment. Membership in the New Jersey State Children’s Chorus is a one season commitment.

What does tuition for the NJSCC cover?

Tuition covers all vocal instruction, rehearsals, music, staff, and applicable facility rental fees.

Do NJSCC members receive individual singing lessons?

NJSCC members receive group vocal instruction during the course of their weekly rehearsals, learning healthy vocal technique, proper breathing and posture, and music fundamentals. One-on-one instruction is not currently included in NJSCC membership.

Do you offer a payment plan?

Payment plans are available through FACTS Tuition Management.  All NJSCC families must set up a FACTS account.

Are scholarships available?

Need-based partial financial aid scholarships are available. No child will be excluded from participation for financial reasons.

Are there any other costs in addition to the tuition?

Students will provide their own concert attire which is currently a red NJSCC polo shirt. Tickets to public performances for family and guests are not included in tuition.

When and where are rehearsals?

Rehearsals for both the Apprentice and Intermediate choirs will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 155 Linwood Ave., Ridgewood, NJ 07450 on Tuesday afternoons from September through June.  The Apprentice Choir rehearses from 4:30–5:30pm. The Intermediate Choir rehearses from 5:00–6:25pm.

Does a parent or guardian need to be present at rehearsals?

Parents and guardians are not expected to be present at weekly rehearsals. Parents or guardians may be asked to stay to observe rehearsal a few times per season to assist the Artistic Director and Chorus Manager. In general, rehearsals are most productive when parents are not present in the rehearsal room, allowing our singers to better focus on the task at hand.

Are singers expected to practice outside of rehearsals?

Most singers will find their weekly rehearsal time sufficient to learn their music. Some singers may find that additional practice time outside of the rehearsal may occasionally be necessary, but it is not generally expected.

What kinds of music does the NJSCC perform?

The NJSCC primarily performs music from the folk song and classical music canon although Broadway selections have been heard at our concerts. Music is selected for the appropriate vocal and musical development of our singers.

How many performances will be scheduled? Where will they take place?

The number of performances varies from year to year but will always include at least two public performances for family, friends, and guests. Additional performances may be scheduled with ample notice to parents and guardians. The biannual public performances will be held primarily in Bergen County.

Will my child have any solo performance opportunities?

Solo opportunities arise from time to time, but NJSCC members will primarily sing as part of their respective Choirs.

Will the chorus be taking any trips outside the immediate area to perform? If so, will there be additional costs?

There are currently no plans to travel outside of Bergen County.  However, invitations to participate in various locations around the tristate will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. There will be no mandatory expenses associated with these trips outside of Bergen County.

I’d love to help! Will there be any opportunities for parent involvement?

When you register your child you will have an opportunity to volunteer for various committees and roles within the organization. Your help is needed and much appreciated!

Does the NJSCC accept donations?
